How Much Tile Do I Need?

Think about peel and stick tiles for your next Kitchen renovation project and not sure how much will you need? By following this simple guide, you will know how to measure your kitchen backsplash area and how to calculate the square footage of tiles required. Here’s the best way to do it:

Collecting Following Items

  • Tape Measure
  • Pencil and Paper
  • Calculator
  • Photo of the space printed on paper – straight views are best (or simply make a quick sketch as a reference)

Measure your Kitchen

For calculation purposes, we are going to measure everything in inches, not feet.

We start by reviewing the tile area and separate the project into three rectangular sections labelled A, B and C.

For each area, using a measuring tape, measure the space between the countertop and the upper cabinets. That is the height of your backsplash. Now measure the length of your backsplash. Stretch the tape throughout the entire length of your backsplash.

  • Section A: 30x46''
  • Section B: 15x21''
  • Section C: 15x21''

If you have a window or any other obstacle intersecting your backsplash area, you will need to subtract this area from the total square footage area you want to tile.

Calculate Area

Next, we multiply the height and width of each section and mark the totals down:

  • Section A – 30 x 46” = 1380
  • Section B – 15 x 21” = 315
  • Section C – 15 x 21” = 315

Then, we add together the section totals. In this case we don’t need to consider any windows or blank sections in this project.

  • 1380 + 315 + 315 = 2010

Divide that number by 144 to find the square footage:

  • 2010 / 144 = 14 sq. feet (rounded up)

Add 10% overage to account for cutting mistakes and breakage (we multiply the total square footage by 1.1):

  • 14 sq. feet x 1.1 = 15.4 sq. feet of tile required

Choose The Tile

Now, it's the time to check our collection and choose the backsplash tile you want. For example, if you want this 3D Cube Rhombus Black Peel and Stick Backsplash Tile, go to the specification page and check how many tiles contain a box and coverage area of each box:

So you need to shop 2 boxes 20 pieces for your project. Let's get started!
